There are a number of specialized handicrafts produced in Nepal - pottery from Bhaktapur, paintings / thangkas, distinctive weaving from various regions of Nepal, hand-knitted woolen wear, pashminas, Tibetan rugs and carpets, jewellery and brassware. These and a variety of goods from many other parts of the Himalaya are available in the bazaars.

Kathmandu has a number of excellent bookshops dealing specifically with Himalayan climbing, history and culture. The Thamel area of Kathmandu offers a wide range of shops specializing in trekking and climbing equipment, should you need to rent or purchase some last minute items for your trek. Credit cards are not normally accepted, but when they are, a service charge may be added to the cost of your purchase.

We cannot be held responsible for the quality or price of any goods you may purchase. The more expensive the purchase, the more care should be taken in choosing. Negotiating price is a favorite pastime at Nepalese stalls, booths and storefronts. If you are happy with the price, then that is all that matters.
