Kilimanjaro Itinerary for Spring 2008
Day 1: Depart
U.S. on late afternoon / early evening flight. Transfer
to connecting flight to Amsterdam.
Day 2: Arrive
Amsterdam in early AM. Transfer to connecting flight to
Kilimanjaro International Airport. (example – KLM
10:30AM departure to JRO arriving 8:05PM). Transfer by bus
to Dik Dik Hotel or similar. Overnight Dik Dik.
Day 3: Rest
and acclimatization day at Dik Dik hotel. Small day trip
optional. Discuss climbing strategy, sort gear, collect
lost luggage if necessary, rest and recover from jetlag.
Overnight Dik Dik.
Day 4: Depart
Dik Dik after breakfast to Marangu Gate to begin climb.
Hike 3-4 hours to Mandara. Arrive early afternoon. Overnight
at Mandara Hut.
Day 5: Depart
Mandara after breakfast to Horombu. Hike takes 5-6 hours.
Overnight at Horombu Hut.
Day 6: Altitude
acclimatization day. Short day hike in morning. Rest and
acclimate in afternoon. Overnight at Horombu Hut.
Day 7: Depart
Horombu after breakfast to Kibo. Hike takes 6-7 hours. Arrive
early afternoon. Eat early and get to sleep early. We leave
Kibo Hut at midnight under full moon!
Day 8: We reach
Gilman’s Point and Uhuru Peak by early AM. Return
to Kibo Hut for lunch and descend to Horombu for dinner.
Overnight at Horombu Hut.
Day 9: Depart
Horombu after breakfast for remainder of descent to Marangu
Gate. Arrive at gate in early afternoon and transfer to
Dik Dik Hotel for Victory Dinner. Overnight at Dik Dik Hotel.
Day 10: Depart
Dik Dik after breakfast to Ngorongoro Crater National Park.
Travel time roughly 4 hours. Arrive in afternoon in time
for game drive. Overnight Ngorongoro.
Day 11: Game
viewing in Ngorongoro. Overnight Ngorongoro.
Day 12: Breakfast
Ngorongoro then overland through Lake Manyara National Park
to Tarangire National Park. Arrive for afternoon game drive.
Overnight Tarangire.
Day 13: Leave
Tarangire after breakfast to return to Arusha / Dik Dik
for afternoon and preparation for departure from Kilimanjaro
International Airport. (Currently, departures from Kili
to Amsterdam are 11PM departures).
Day 14: Arrive
Amsterdam in early AM. Depart AM Amsterdam for US. Arrive
U.S. late AM. Transfer home…arrive mid-afternoon.
